How to get Silk Touch
- Enchanting table: Included in the Java 26.3 table pool. Check the actual offer on a compatible item or book; inclusion is not a guaranteed maximum-level roll.
- Ordinary librarian pool: Included in the pinned version’s tradeable tag. Inspect the exact book, level and price before trading. The optional Villager Trade Rebalance changes the trading rules.
- Loot and other sources: The relevant loot table and generated book determine the result.

Anvil cost worked example
Applying a level-1 Silk Touch book onto a brand-new
item costs 4
XP levels (book multiplier 4 times level
1). Adding it on top of an item that has already been on
the anvil once raises the cost by another 1
level for the prior-work penalty; twice and the penalty jumps to
3; three times, 7;
and so on by 2^n - 1.
The book also has its own work count. A previously combined book adds its penalty even when the target is fresh. Check all selected enchantments together: the related links below describe pairwise compatibility, not one mutually compatible loadout. Data and method
Compatibility, maximum levels and anvil multipliers are checked against Java Edition 26.3 (released 2026-09-15). The enchantment definitions (anvil cost, maximum level, supported items, exclusive sets) and the table, trade and loot tags are the same as in 1.21.11. The book fee is half the definition’s anvil_cost, rounded down with a minimum of one, multiplied by the resulting enchantment level. Prior-work penalties are added separately.
